Our Boat

Our boat is named Wizard. She came to us with that name and it seemed kinda fun, so we kept it. Anyway, we heard it's bad luck to change a boat's name. (Since, we're new boat owners, we didn't want to upset the"boat gods".)  We're told the name comes from a 70's comic character, the 'Wizard of Id', a parody on the Wizard of Oz mixed with the Freudian term for the human psyche "Id", but I like to think Wizard is a whimsical name...and so, Off to Sea, the Wizard...the name of our blog is all about fun!

Wizard is a 1978 40 ft  Dennis Choate designed IOR 2-tonner racer  turned "cruiser" by the previous owner who sailed from Portland, Oregon to San Francisco Bay.  By cruiser I mean, she's equipped with a water maker, two solar panels, a wind generator, auto pilot and furling jib and other added cruising systems not common on a racing sloop.  She also came with a full hard top dodger added to the original flush deck design, which will be great protection from sun and weather.  We are excited to learn all about the Wizard, how she sails and test this equipment on our  future plans to cruise to the South Pacific,  as we go.. Off to Sea, on the Wizard!
